On a friend’s recommendation, I saw Dr. De Luca for my Lasik surgery. From the very first pre-screening appointment, he was completely professional and no-nonsense. Sometimes this no-nonsense attitude comes across as shortness, but I like my doctors to be a little bit brusque, rather than having a warm and gooey bedside manner.
The thing I liked the most about Dr. De Luca is he’s VERY cautious. In fact, the reason that my friend recommended him to me is that he actually turned her DOWN for Lasik surgery, telling her that he thought it would be too risky for her, so he refused to do it. She appreciated that a lot, rather than some of these other Lasik places which just want to push you into the surgery so they can get your money. On the contrary, Dr. De Luca is very careful about explaining every possible option and every possible risk.
During the surgery itself, which is a pretty freaky experience, I was very glad to be hearing this guy’s voice the whole time. As usual, he was calm, professional and no-nonsense, and he talked to me throughout the entire procedure and explained exactly what was about to happen and how it would look or feel, so I was never surprised or nervous. (Okay, who am I kidding: I was a little nervous, but he doped me up with Valium beforehand so it was manageable.)
I am now in month 9 of my post-op, and Dr. De Luca is still keeping up with me and having regular appointments (all the post-op is included in the one flat price of Lasik). I’m deciding whether to get a touch-up in one eye (touch-ups are also included in the same flat price), and he’s explaining all the benefits and risks, including asking me to consider what my eyesight will be like in another 10 years when it might be time for reading glasses, and how my decision will affect me then. I’m glad that someone is forcing me to think long into the future, instead of just giving me what I want right now and then sending me away.
Overall, Dr. De Luca is like your over-protective dad, who respects your decision whatever it is, but asks you to consider all the possible outcomes first. I would highly recommend him to anyone considering Lasik. ~Yelp
